LEW TABACKIN TRIO

AFTERWARDS DJ BEUK AT THE CAFE

Lew Tabackin tenorsax/fluit, Philippe Aerts bas, Mourad Benhammou drums

American jazz musician Lew Tabackin is a household name since the
1960s as a tenor saxophonist and flutist, with many honorable mentions
in, among others, the Downbeat Polls.

Saxophonist Lew
Tabackin remained true to the big tenor sound with which he grew up,
Coleman Hawkins’ presence, Ben Webster’s warmth and Sonny Rollins’
inventiveness. He has also gained top recognition as a flutist. His
solos are like ‘miniature compositions inside each piece of music’
(Downbeat), structured and spontaneous at the same time. His recent trio
album Soundscapes features original compositions alongside pieces by,
among others, John Lewis and Duke Ellington.

Lew Tabackin
garnered great acclaim in the 1970s and 80s with the big band he led
together with his wife Toshiko Akiyoshi, at first from Los Angeles and
later from New York. The band topped the Downbeat Polls and played the
North Sea Jazz Festival several times. His album with alto player Phil
Woods received an honorable mention in the Penguin Guide to Jazz.

‘Lew
Tabackin sounds as vivacious as ever on Soundscapes, the listener in
the palm of his hands from the opening notes’ (New York City Jazz
Record).
