After Guus Janssen’s New CrossCurrents (November 20), now, in Lennie’s Pennies, Rein de Graaff and his guests also put Lennie Tristano’s cool jazz in the spotlights. ‘A combination of Bach and Charlie Parker’, to use de Graaff’s own words. The American alto saxophonist Gary Foster (1936) is one of the most important performers of Tristano’s music. His younger Dutch fellow musician Marco Kegel also speaks the musical language of Tristano. He shared the stage with Lee Konitz (one of his heroes) and recorded a CD with Gary Foster who, by the way, appears as a special guest of Henk Meutgeert’s Jazz Orchestra at the Concertgebouw coming Sunday.
