In this special late night concert guitarist Joe Morris presents his own take on gypsy jazz. His new band Lava Bat is modelled after Django Rheinhardt’s classic Quintette du Hot Club de France, with a line-up of three guitarists, bass and violin. This adventurous version of the classic model features Morris’ former student Mary Halvorson, currently successful as a band leader in her own right, and violin talent Yasmine Azaiez. Morris has developed his unique style of guitar playing by following the example free jazz saxophonists. Downbeat praises him as ‘the preeminent free music guitarist of his generation’. ‘If Ornette Coleman were Jim Hall, he would be Joe Morris’ (Village Voice).
