LAMA TRIO & JOACHIM BADENHORST

Joachim Badenhorst (bas)klarinet, Susana Santos Silva trompet/flügelhorn, Gonçalo Almeida bas/effecten, Greg Smith drums/elektronica

Imaginative, narrative music by the young Portuguese-American trio Lama
and (bass-) clarinet player Joachim Badenhorst. Their album Elephant’s
Journey (Clean Feed) is filled with literary influences.

Lama is
an intriguing young band that combines influences from poetry and
literature into bright compositions. Lama was founded in Rotterdam as a
collaboration between three improvising musicians: double bassist
Gonçalo Almeida and trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, both from Portugal,
and drummer Greg Smith from Montreal. The released four albums on the
label Clean Feed, including a collaboration with Chris Speed.

On
the most recent album Lama welcomes Joachim Badenhorst, the Flemish
(bass-)clarinet player, known at the Bimhuis as a member of the Han
Bennink Trio and from his carte blanche-concert in 2015. The album
Elephant’s Journey, which features mostly compositions by band leader
Almeida, has been named after the eponymous José Saramago novel, but
contains references to other literary classics as well. Above all, it’s
narrative music performed in an accessible way.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
