With her project Pursuance: The Coltranes, saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin is making waves in the jazz world. On the eponymous album she plays compositions by two of the most important musical innovators of the last century, Alice and John Coltrane. For her contemporary versions, Lakecia Benjamin has collaborated with many famous guest musicians. At the BIMHUIS she will play with a top band from New York.
Pursuance is the most ambitious project to date for Lakecia Benjamin, who has previously accompanied major stars such as Alicia Keys, Macy Gray and Gregory Porter. Funk and soul were strongly present on her first two albums. With Pursuance she highlights the mystical, spiritual side of Alice and John Coltrane, who married in 1965 and performed together until John’s early death in 1967. Lakecia Benjamin selected compositions of both Alice and John that instantly resonated with her upon first listen.
