A night in honor of Ramses: Egyptian or Amsterdam divinity? What do Umm Kulthum and Ramses Shaffy have in common? The Konrad Koselleck Big Band and a selection of soloists from various genres will delve into the phenomenon that is Ramses Shaffy. His music serves as a point of departure, but also his cultural background: his father was Egyptian and his mother was of Polish-Russian descent.
Famous songs by Ramses will be arranged for big band, using jazz and Arabic music as sources of inspiration. Several songs, especially translated in the Egyptian-Arabic language, will be performed by Dutch-Moroccan singer Teema. Actor Sabri El Hamus presents Egyptian poetry and dance, and Jeroen Zijlstra will sing his posthumous tribute ‘Ramses’ together with Lydia van Dam.
‘Sure, it’s as loud and impressive as a big band is supposed to be, but beyond that it’s a revelation to hear how serene this bunch of metal can become, how Koselleck makes use of all the dynamic possibilities of his ensemble’ (de Volkskrant).
Afterwards: DJ PHILIPPONA Jazz Lost & Found. Dance till
midnight to the eclectic mix of hidden treasures & crazy grooves.
