Turbulent times revive in music, words and moving images: the Konrad Koselleck Big Band and radio presenter Botte Jellema revisit the period when the Bimhuis was founded, 40 years ago.

In an interactive concert with music, spoken word and moving images, the Konrad Koselleck Big Band will go back in time, to the foundation of the Bimhuis 40 years ago. Together with documentary maker Botte Jellema the musicians will give life to the turbulent 1970s, when Amsterdam was shaking to its foundations.

Around 1974, the formative year of the Bimhuis, society was in uproar. Amsterdam was moved by the Nieuwmarkt riots, in close proximity to the original Bimhuis location. It shook to its foundations, not only because of the quest for ultimate musical freedom, but also because the whole neighborhood was affected by the construction of Amsterdam’s first subway line.

The musicians in the band will react live to stories, field recordings and interviews made in the neighborhood. The ensemble playing is based on fresh arrangements, compositions and improvisational concepts developed by Konrad Koselleck, in close collaboration with Botte Jellema, who is renowned for his contributions to, among others, Radio 1, VPRO and NTR.

After the concert pianist Dave Burrell will perform. The solo series by Dave Burrell are becoming a tradition at the Bimhuis. This year he will return for a new series of solo concerts in which he will present his unique take on jazz history. Burrell, a pioneer of the 1960s New York avant-garde, was the musical partner of groundbreaking artists such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
