The Congolese ensemble Konono No. 1 creates dazzling dance music with self-built electric instruments. Their hypnotic grooves on heavily amplified and distorted thumb pianos exhibit parallels with electro, experimental rock and minimal music. Originally intended to accompany traditional rituals, their repertoire has made the transition to the Congolese capital Kinshasa. Their relentlessly energetic sound can now be heard above urban noise, reflecting hectic metropolitan culture. ‘Feverishly pulsing percussion… this is music with its feet planted firmly on the street’ (The Wire).
