KINSMEN Feat. RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA & KADRI GOPALNATH
Sunday31 October 2010

Indian-American alto saxophone player Rudresh Mahanthappa connects contemporary jazz to Indian classical music. In the Kinsmen project two worlds collide: the jazz quartet of Mahanthappa and the Indian trio of his great example Kadri Gopalnath. The unique thing about Gopalnath is that he plays age old South Indian music on saxophone, a modern Western instrument. ‘Kinsmen is a stylish and evocative blend of indigenous art forms, an extraordinarily successful East-meets-West experiment, and the most stimulating world/jazz soundclash since Ornette Coleman jammed in Jajouka’ (JazzTimes). Mahanthappa topped the 2009 Downbeat critics Polls in the Rising Star Jazz Artist and Rising Star Alto Saxophone categories.

Please note: for logistical reasons, the concert has been moved from the Muziekgebouw concerthall to the Bimhuis. Line up and starting time remain unchanged, prepurchased tickets are still valid.
