KENNY GARRETT QUINTET

Kenny Garrett altsax/fluit, Vernell Brown piano, Corcoran Holt bas, Rudy Bird percussie, McClenty Hunter drums

Famous American alto sax player is back at the Bimhuis. ‘His brawny tone is one of the most immediately identifiable and pleasurable sounds in jazz’ (Downbeat).

Alto and soprano saxophone player Kenny Garrett made his breakthrough right after he played the Bimhuis for the first time, in 1986 with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. With his powerful playing, which fuses bop and funk, he made waves in Miles Davis’ band and he achieved great success as a solo artist. His rare performances at the Bimhuis are referred to as ‘legendary’ (de Volkskrant).

On his most recent album Pushing the World Away, the saxophonist pays tribute to a handful of his heroes, including Chick Corea, Chuco Valdés and Sonny Rollins. His compositions are diverse, from groovejazz and swing to mambo and calypso. As always, his band features young musicians, but this time also the seasoned percussionist Rudy Bird, who had also performed with Miles Davis..

‘A soloist of volcanic intensity’ (New York Times).

‘A tornado of sound that swirls with passion’ (Downbeat).

‘He’s the most interesting alto player around, my favorite’ (David Sanborn).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
