Finals of the competition for jazz talent from conservatories in Los Angeles, Cologne, Texas, Leuven and Amsterdam.

The Keep an Eye Jazz Award is an annual competition for extraordinary vocal talents and jazz bands from Conservatorium van Amsterdam and similar institutions in the United States and Europe. This year participants will come from Los Angeles, Cologne, North Texas and Leuven. The jury will consist of musicians, educators and professionals from the cultural world: Gerry Godley, Jules Buckley, Ruben Hein, Tineke Postma and Gijsbert Kamer.

PROGRAMME:

SHAI GOLAN GROUP (LA)

The
Shai Golan Group is an ensemble of students from California State
University Northridge. The members of the group were selected for their
outstanding musicianship, creativity, originality, and willingness to
learn. The band is led by Shai Golan (alto sax), and features Evan
Waltmire (tenor sax), Victor San Pedro (guitar), Adam Hersh (piano),
Andy McCauley (bass), Kirk Portuguez (drums). This group strives to find
a deeper meaning in music by exploring different concepts through the
performance of original compositions and jazz standards.

LIYA GRIGORYAN TRIO (AMSTERDAM)
Liya Grigoryan piano, Marco Zenini bas, Tancrede DKummer drums

Liya
Grigoryan Trio was formed in Amsterdam, by a piano player from Armenia –
Liya Grigoryan. In 2013 she decided to arrange her own piano trio.
Trying to compose and play original music, mixed of influences of the
traditional armenian music and music of the classical composers.

FIVE MOODS (LEUVEN)

Five
Moods is a quintet founded by young, talented musicians, coming from
all over Flanders. They first met in the jazz department of the Lemmens
Institute of Leuven, Belgium. When playing, they aim for a unique group
sound in which interaction is of great importance. The repertoire of
Five Moods consists of arranged jazz standards and original pieces.

TAMARA LUKASHEVA (KOLN)
Tamara Lukasheva zang, Sebastian Scobel piano, Jakon Kuhneman bas, Dominik Mahnig drums

Elegant
combination of Ukrainian folk elements with modern jazz sounds.The
Quartet presents Tamara’s original compositions as well as
interpretations of well-known jazz classics.The project was founded in
October 2010 and played their first concert within a month.After a
successful performance at the Jazz Against The Mashine Festival in
Cologne, the Tamara Lukasheva Quartet was invited to participate in
Campus Jazz, broadcast by WDR 5 Radio. In November 2014 the Quartet won
the Young German Jazz Prize in Osnabrück, Germany.

XAVI TORRES TRIO (AMSTERDAM)
Xavi Torres piano, Matt Adomeit bas, Joan Terol drums

The
Xavi Torres Trio plays mainly original music that searches for the
personality of the trio and blends their wide array of influences to
create a unique sound. Joan and Xavi have been playing together for
eight years, and the great bassist Matt Adomeit joined this
collaboration one and a half years ago. They are constantly redeveloping
their own fresh concept by going out of the box and searching for new
musical adventures.

UNITY (NORTH TEXAS)
Stuart Mack trompet, Brian Horton sax, Brad Kang gitaar, Chris Wright bas, Terence Hobdy drums

The
members of UNITY have played together for several years in the context
of large and small ensembles at the university and projects outside of
school. They share an interest in creative improvisation based on new
compositions and new treatments of traditional repertoire. Among their
musical influences are Elvin Jones, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Lage
Lund, and Chris Dave. Stuart Mack (trumpet, from Illinois) and Brad Kang
(guitar, from South Korea) are undergraduate jazz studies majors. Chris
Wright (bass, from North Carolina) and Terence Hobdy (drums, from
Texas) will soon complete master’s degrees in jazz studies. Brian Horton
(tenor saxophone, from North Carolina) is a doctoral student with an
emphasis in jazz composition. Mack, Kang, and Horton are current or
former members of the One O’Clock Lab Band.
