TRIO KAUFMANN / GRATKOWSKI / DEJOODE

Frank Gratkowski altsax/klarinet, Achim Kaufmann piano, Wilbert de Joode bas

Masterful improvisations with the energy of jazz and the transparency of 21st century chamber music. ‘Improvised chamber music of the highest order’ (Signal to Noise).

In early 2002 they first got together as a trio in the Zaal 100 venue in Amsterdam. Since then, they have been touring and performing internationally as a trio: reeds player Frank Gratkowski, pianist Achim Kaufmann and double bassist Wilbert de Joode. Their music, which is always completely improvised from the outset, has the transparency of 21st century chamber music and the energy of jazz and other contemporary music. Silence, noise, harmony and abstraction interchange while the musicians always manage to appear in unpredictable ways.

‘From hot, Dolphy-esque cascades to piano-roll pointillism, to unresolved twelve-tone tales, it’s improvised chamber music of the highest order’ (Signal to Noise).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open after the concert (reservations via 020-7882158).
