Five years ago, a group of Amsterdam musicians started the concert series Karnatic lab that resulted in an annual Karnatic Lab Festival. For this 5th edition, two groups combining jazz and music from the Balkans are coming to the Bimhuis. Special guest from Bulgaria is the world famous kaval player Theodosii Spassov (well known from his work with ‘Le mystère des voix bulgares’) with his quartet. The Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Man Bites Dog find each other in their mutual love for the music from the Balkans, approached from their own perspective. The irresistible groove of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band, opened up by the exciting liberty of Man Bites Dog, the unusual instrumentation with horns, accordion and electric guitar will create an exceptional sound. Other parts of the Karnatic Lab Festival can be heard on Friday May 14 in the Badcuyp and Saturday May 15 in the Ysbreker (www.karnaticlab.com).
