Kalfa/Dumitriu/Badenhorst: Black Sea Songs
Sanem Kalfa vocals/electronics, George Dumitriu viola/guitar/electronics, Joachim Badenhorst clarinet/electronics
The creative Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst joins singer Sanem Kalfa and multi-instrumentalist George Dumitriu for an exploration of traditional songs from the Black Sea region. The flavours of old Ottoman melodies are presented in an original contemporary language, with fresh nuances of electronics and open improvisation. The music reflects the unique character of the Black Sea region, where a rich variety of cultures interchange.
Sanem Kalfa and George Dumitriu are known for their intense duo performances. The Turkish vocalist and the Rumanian violist are both living in The Netherlands. Sanem Kalfa won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, when the jury was led by Quincy Jones. George Dumitriu plays throughout Europe in various ensembles in the fields of contemporary classical and improvised music. Joachim Badenhorst made an impression at the BIMHUIS with his solo performances, and as a member of the Han Bennink Trio.
This concert is part of their CD Release tour ‘Black Sea Songs’.
