Jazz with classical and gospel influences by piano virtuoso Justin Kauflin, one of the great discoveries of Quincy Jones and former protégé of Clark Terry.
On his most recent album Dedication, pianist Justin Kauflin pays tribute to his masters including Clark Terry and Mulgrew Miller. Alongside jazz the clean, disciplined compositions contain influences of European classical music and American gospel. Dedication was produced by Quincy Jones, the man behind the legendary albums of Michael Jackson.
Justin Kauflin lost his eyesight at age 11, which did not stop him to graduate summa cum laude as jazz pianist at William Paterson University in New Jersey. During his education Kauflin already played in the ensemble of Clark Terry. With the famous trumpeter, who died last year, Kauflin developed a special relationship, as can be seen in the moving documentary Keep On Keepin’ On.
‘His classical training is apparent in his delicate touch, clear articulation, and his ability to unspool long, graceful, improvised melodic lines’ (JazzTimes).
