The Congolese singer/percussionist Jupiter collaborated with Damon Albarn and makes waves with his energetic street band. ‘One of the most exciting performers on the Kinshasa music scene (The Guardian).
Better late than never: singer/percussionist Jupiter Bokondji from Congo approaches 50, but he is about to break through to an international audience. In his homeland he’s a celebrated musician known for his unique sound and his uncompromising views. On top of that he’s a talent scout, who attracts many young musicians known as ‘little Jupiters’. The great Jupiter is the self-proclaimed inventor of ‘bofenia rock’, a mix of native Congolese rhythms and influences from afro beat, funk and rock. Music that blew away Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz, DRC Music), who invited Jupiter to go on his Africa Express tour together with British and African artists. Obviously, Jupiter brought along his band Okwess International, a well-oiled groove machine which will transform the Bimhuis into a steaming Kinshasa.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
