JULIE SASSOON SOLO, DIMITAR BODUROV TRIO
Friday12 June 2015

Double bill with British solo pianist and the trio of Bulgarian pianist Dimitar Bodurov. ‘Julie Sassoon consistently makes the piano, her voice and her deepest emotions sound awesomely and naturally inseparable’ (The Guardian).

British pianist Julie Sassoon transcends classical piano and jazz, treading her own path between the improvisations of Keith Jarrett and the modern compositions of Scriabin and Steve Reich. Her music is lyrical, powerful and full of emotion. She will perform music from her most recent album Land of Shadows, in which she explores her German-Jewish identity.

Bulgarian-born, Amsterdam-based jazz pianist Dimitar Bodurov remains fascinated by the traditional songs and melodies of his native country, which he incorporates in his compositions. Still, his trio sounds unmistakably contemporary, with tight ensemble playing and lively rhythmic structures. ‘Brightly and boldly, the Bulgarian folk music is taken up in contemporary jazz. Piano, double bass and percussion gallop as one organic whole through the rhythmic fields’ (Jazzenzo).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
