Just like many guitarists of his generation Juan Gómez ‘Chicuelo’ knows every record by the renowned duo Camarón de la Isla & Paco de Lucía by heart. However, with the release of his second CD, he has, in his own words “left the nest once and for all.” On ‘Diapasión’ the guitarist from Catalonia subtlety weaves together several musical strands into his own musical universe, calmly and self-confidently emerging as one of the most important innovators of what in contemporary Spain is called ‘el toque moderno’: the modern flamenco guitar. Together with such vocalists as Duquende and Miguel Poveda, for whom he is the regular accompanist, Chicuelo proves that Catalonia is a major centre for flamenco alongside Andalusia. A go-as-you-please ticket for the entire evening programme on 1 November in the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and Bimhuis costs € 40. Box office and Bimhuis café open at 8PM.
