JORIS ROELOFS TRIO
PRESENTATION CD: ALIENS DELIBERATING
Joris Roelofs basklarinet, Matt Penman bas, Ted Poor drums
Joris Roelofs excels at alto saxophone as well as bass clarinet and is rightfully praised as ‘an excellent reeds player’ (Trouw). On his new CD Aliens Deliberating he once again collaborates with two remarkable talents from his former hometown New York, double bassist Matt Penman and drummer Ted Poor. The title piece Aliens Deliberating is an impressive solo for bass clarinet. ‘It exemplifies what the instrument can do, how rich and broad its sound is and how many different associations it can evoke’, says Roelofs. According to him the trio pieces on the CD are like good conversations between the three musicians.
Alongside his own trio, Joris Roelofs plays with Jesse van Ruller and Clemens van der Feen in the Chambertones Trio. Matt Penman has collaborated with John Scofield and Madeleine Peyroux. Ted Poor has accompanied Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel and many others.
‘Joris Roelofs has an incomparably beautiful tone on alto saxophone as well as bass clarinet. His playing is not geared towards the spectacular, but at pulling in listeners with astounding technical control, a wealth of ideas and the coupling of emotion and melody. These qualities in itself are sufficient for a great band, but the trio is even greater than the sum of its parts’ (Mischa Andriessen in De Telegraaf).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
