Program:
19:30: Lecture by Joris Roelofs about Nietzsche, Hannah Arendt and improvisation
21:00: concert
Joris Roelofs plays various saxophones, clarinets and flutes, all on a high level. For example, he was the lead alto saxophonist with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw for fifteen years. In his band Rope Dance he plays bass clarinet. The quintet originated from the composition assignment of the North Sea Jazz Festival, for which the band leader took inspiration from classical composers such as Debussy. Rope Dance features major players from Dutch and Belgian jazz.
Prior to the concert, Joris Roelofs will give a lecture related to his philosophy studies. In this lecture he links the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche to freedom and improvisation in music. Joris Roelofs coordinates the jazz clarinet department and Conservatorium van Amsterdam and he teaches a master course in music and philosophy entitled Freedom and Improvisation.
‘Joris Roelofs has built his career balancing intense discipline and a deep commitment to post-bop tradition with a measured exploratory streak’ (Downbeat).
