8 PM DOCU–DRAMA
PAN! OUR MUSIC ODYSSEY – a steelband story (Jean Michel Gilbert, Barthélémy Fougea & Kim Johnson, Trinidad/Tobago, 2014, 85′)
This partially fictional documentary follows the development of the
steel drum from the perspective of a fictional character, Goldteeth. The
origin of the steel drum from tuned oil drums is the point of departure
for this Trinidad-based story encompassing four generations and five
continents. The film culminates in an impassioned registration of the
so-called Panorama, a steel drum orchestra competition in which
ensembles of 130 players battle for the first prize.
‘The film focuses on the birth
of the instrument but more so on the major impact this had on the
Trinidadian society, the pan was a vector of peace in the urban violence
in Port of Spain.’ (www.pan.tt)
9:45 PM CONCERT: JONATHAN SCALES FOURCHESTRA
Innovative mix of steel drums, bass guitar and percussion. ‘Steel drummer Jonathan Scales brings new vitality to the instrument, picking up where Othello Molineaux left off with Jaco Pastorius’ (Jazz Times).
Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is like a contemporary jazz trio where the piano is replaced by steel drums. Band leader Jonathan Scales is being compared to another innovator of the steel drums, Othello Molineaux, who made waves in the band of bass legend Jaco Pastorius. Jonathan Scales also collaborates with an extraordinary bass guitarist, Cody Wright. Drummer Chaisary Schenk completes the trio. Mixtape Symphony is the most recent album of Jonathan Scales Fourchestra. The band has collaborated with among others Victor Wooten and Howard Levy (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones).
‘The innovative steel drummer Jonathan Scales brings new vitality to the traditional Caribbean instrument, picking up where Othello Molineaux left off 20 years ago with Jaco Pastorius’ (Jazz Times).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
