These jazz giants challenge each other with bop, blues and funk. ‘This is a group that plays jazz the way it’s intended—alive and in-the-moment’ (All About Jazz).

For the first time these two giants join forces on the Bimhuis stage: guitarist John Scofield and saxophonist Joe Lovano, both famous for their unique, compelling and instantly recognizable styles of playing. Around 1990 they recorded a couple of albums together for the Blue Note label, including the successful Meant To Be with drummer Bill Stewart among others. Ever since the musicians have followed their own path: Scofield as one of the most popular jazz guitarists of all time and Lovano with a great diversity of projects including his Grammy-winning Joe Lovano Nonet. After their reunion in 2008 they come together every once in a while for highly acclaimed concerts full of bop, blues and funk, improvising on compositions by ‘Sco’ as well as ‘Lo’, plus songs by for example Coltrane and Monk. Now they present their new band featuring bassist Ben Street and, once again, master drummer Bill Stewart.

‘This is a group that plays jazz the way it’s intended—alive and in-the-moment’ (All About Jazz).

‘John and I have such a reputation together. We have a lot of repertoire and a way of playing that’s really special. We have a ball together. We’ve known each other since the early ’70s. Through the years of watching each other and hearing each other in all these different settings… It’s fun when we come together. All of a sudden, it’s new music’ (Joe Lovano).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
