John Abercrombie was revered for his personal, unorthodox style on electric guitar. His intuitive, melodic and profound harmonies give his compositions a personal signature: contemplative, sensitive and, as he described it, ‘not in your face’. Three musicians with personal connections to John pay tribute to him with a selection of compositions from his rich back catalogue.
Initiator is guitarist Ed Verhoeff, who could be heard together with his inspirator Abercrombie on The Guitar Album. Band leader on that album was another Dutch jazz hero, Hein van der Geyn, who was part of John’s trio in the USA and who will play double bass in this project. Drummer is Adam Nussbaum, a frequent collaborator of Abercrombie, who has also worked with celebrities such as Randy Brecker and John Scofield.
American guitarist/composer John Abercrombie (1944-2017) recorded 54 albums as a leader and over 180 as a sideman. These were groundbreaking and helped define the character of the renowned ECM label. John collaborated with countless greats such as Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Charles Lloyd, Michael Brecker and Jack de Johnette.
