JOAN LA BARBARA

The extended voice

Joan La Barbara voice/electronics

Vocalist/composer Joan La Barbara has been playing an important part in American music since the 1960s. With her unprecedented vocal command she has interpreted trail-blazing music by such composers as Morton Feldman, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. John Cage declared his astonishment at her prowess and described her as a great musician. Throughout her career she has collaborated with dancers, poets, visual artists and jazz musicians. ‘ One of the works La Barbara will be performing is Gatekeeper (2009), an opera inspired by the complex turnings of Virginia Woolf’s verbal constructs and the demons that plagued her, the fragments of dreams in Joseph Cornell’s journals and some of the dark recesses of Edgar Allan Poe’s mind. She will also bring Conversations (1988) and Solitary Journey (2011), in which she explores real-time composition. ‘One of the great vocal virtuosas of our time’ (San Francisco Examiner).
