Jazzmeia Horn

Jazzmeia Horn vocals, Victor Gould piano, Geraud Portal bass, Henry Conerway III drums

There’s great anticipation surrounding Jazzmeia Horn; she has already been compared to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, and she received compliments from John Hendricks and Al Jarreau. Her singing and vocalese skills are of the highest level, and on top of that she does not shy away from addressing current social issues.

On her recent album A Social Call ahe displays a wide array of influences, from role models such as Mary J. Blige and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, but also from African music and Native American cultures.

At a young age, Jazzmeia Horn won various Downbeat Student Music Awards and she twice reached first place in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition. In 2015 she was declared winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Vocals Competition.

‘The most talked-about jazz vocalist to emerge since Cécile McLorin Salvant and Gregory Porter both became stars … she’s possessed of a sassy tone in the highest register and an array of nonverbal sounds that add drama, hinting at meanings in the music that go beyond what fits on the page’ (New York Times).
