JAZZFEST AMSTERDAM SUMMER SPECIAL

Summer preview to Jazzfest, ‘undoubtedly the best jazz festival in Amsterdam’ (het Parool), with pianist Xavi Torres, duo Bennink/Baas and baritone sax player Tini Thomsen.

The annual Jazzfest presents top acts featuring distinctive musicians from Dutch as well as international jazz. As a preview to the official festival, coming up this autumn, Jazzfest presents a summer special at the Bimhuis with three ensembles from Amsterdam.

Last June, Spanish pianist Xavi Torres won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition with his trio, in 2015 he won the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award with his trio, and in 2014 he won the same competition as best soloist. His compositions on the album Skyline have been inspired by, among others, Wayne Shorter and Maurice Ravel.

‘Jazz with its feet firmly planted in the present’, is how de Volkskrant describes the music of guitarist Reinier Baas (The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble), who will improvise with Holland’s most adventurous drummer Han Bennink.

‘I bring energy, not the typical complicated solo’, says Tini Thomsen about her band MaxSax. She plays baritone sax, not like Gerry Mulligan or Pepper Adams, but rocking and pounding like Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. The Hamburg-born saxophonist has made name playing with, among others, New Cool Collective.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
