Every new generation causes innovation in jazz. That is why the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw regularly invites young Dutch ‘jazz influencers’. This edition features guitarist Ella Zirina and saxophonist Jesse Schilderink. Alongside compositions of these guest soloists, you can expect pieces from the orchestra’s acclaimed album The Jazz Influencers from 2020.
Latvian-born Ella Zirina has a passion for the various textures and timbres of the guitar. Her compositions are built out of melodic improvisations, through which she continues to develop her personal sonic environment. In Amsterdam she founded her own trio. This month Ella and her trio will release their debut album Intertwined produced in residency with BIMHUIS Productions and released on BIMHUIS Records.
Rotterdam-based saxophonist Jesse Schilderink has a broad musical interest, which stimulates the continuous evolution and experiment in his playing and writing. He founded the Rotterdam/ Trondheim Collective, a platform for collaborations between Dutch and Norwegian musicians. Jesse’s first release under his own name, High Intensity Damage Control, will appear early 2023.
The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is at the absolute top of the big bands in Europe. The orchestra won several Edison Awards and has performed with world class soloists such as Chick Corea, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Joshua Redman. In 2020, nine young jazz artists were commissioned tot write compositions for the big band. This resulted in the album The Jazz Influencers, and the eponymous concert series.
