Tom Harrell’s trumpet playing always makes the blood rush, whether he plays sensual ballads or flaming improvisations. His battle with schizophrenia does not hold him back in his quest for musical perfection. ‘One of the finest harmonic improvisers in jazz today, a player with a fierce tone who is also capable of playing the most delicate ballad with almost unbearable feeling’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz). The American trumpet player is the special guest of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, which recently won the Edison Award for the best Dutch jazz album of 2010.
