Jasper Blom Kwartet + Bert Joris en Nils Wogram

Jasper Blom tenorsax, Bert Joris trumpet, Nils Wogram trombone, Jesse van Ruller guitar, Frans Jan van der Hoeven bass, Martijn Vink drums

On this rare occasion, Belgian trumpet legend and German jack-of-all-trades on trombone Nils Wogram canb be heard with a Dutch top line-up. The Jasper Blom Quartet (featuring Jesse van Ruller, Frans van der Hoeven and Martijn Vink) presents their double album Polyphony, which was recorded live at the BIMHUIS and released by London-based Whirlwind Recordings. International press response has been enthusiastic, with unanimously glowing reviews in, among others, Stereogum and All About Jazz.

The term ‘polyphony’ (multiple voices) is a great metaphor for the two guest soloists participating in the project, but also for the compositions and the flexible interplay of this group. Polyphony consists of two live recording: part one was inspired by the medieval Flemish polyphonists, interweaving dreamy medieval melodies, and starring the melancholic playing of Bert Joris.

In the second part featuring Nils Wogram, polyphony has a different connotation. The approach is free and sometimes compositions are deconstructed and reassembled. Melodies are interspersed over various instruments, jumping from one to another. The band’s flexible style is complemented perfectly by Nils Wogram’s liberated and investigative playing.
