Pianist/composer Jason Moran has been spearheading the new jazz generation ever since he won the Downbeat Critics Polls in the categories Jazz Artist, Jazz Album and Pianist in 2011. Like no other, he is able to find a connection between classical piano, hip/hop and the modern jazz of Thelonious Monk and Jaki Byard, Moran´s tutor. His most recent Blue Note album,Ten, even contains musical traces of Jimi Hendrix and hip-hop producer J Dilla, alongside influences from comedy and contemporary art. His Bandwagon Trio is universally acclaimed ‘one of the world’s best jazz groups’ (The Guardian). ‘He leads the charge… with his hip-hop persona, love of jazz history and amazing chops you can’t box him in’ (Downbeat).
