JAMES CARTER QUARTET & JAZZORCHESTRA OF THE CONCERTGEBOUW
in collaboration with North Sea Jazz Festival
James Carter-saxophones, clarinets, Gerard Gibbs-piano, Ralphe Armstrong-bass, Leonard King-drums (prevented!). Special guest: Fay Claassen.
Since 1988, the year of his explosive debut in New York, James Carter has been a force of nature that blows away the audience every time he sets foot on stage. He does this with his boundless energy and mighty sound on all saxes and clarinets (from high to low, down to the contra bass variation). Besides that he is a living piece of jazz history, the only ‘Young Lion’ who played with Wynton Marsalis as well as with Lester Bowie. He is totally at home with avant-garde jazz and free funk but also covers all classic and traditional movements. In ‘Living My Life: The Music of Don Byas’ the James Carter Quartet collaborates with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw led by Henk Meutgeert. For a number of years Byas (1912-1972) resided in Amsterdam and also died there. A tribute to one of the greatest saxophone-players.
