Jaimeo Brown Transcendence

Jaleel Shaw alto saxophone, Chris Sholar guitar, Jaimeo Brown drums

Drummer/composer Jaimeo Brown won the Jazz FM Awards 2017 in the Innovation of the Year category, thanks to his innovative mix of jazz, contemporary beats and field recordings. Samples of Afro-American workers, miners and prisoners form the basis for intense music with which Brown continues the tradition of socially aware jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Max Roach.

Jaimeo Brown started his career in the Charles Mingus Big Band. He has collaborated with countless jazz musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Pharoah Sanders and David Murray. He has also worked with leading artists in pop, r&b, house and hip-hop, such as Stevie Wonder, Q-Tip en Carl Craig. The New York based drummer plays at the BIMHUIS with saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and with guitarist/producer Chris Sholar, who won a Grammy for his work on the album Watch the Throne by Kanye west & Jay-Z and who has collaborated with Beyoncé, Robert Glasper and D’Angelo.

‘Work Songs is the confirmation of Brown’s potential of becoming one of the great jazz conceptualists of his generation’ (Downbeat, ****½ review).
