Il Fiore delle Mille e una Nota (The Flower of 1,001 Notes) is a series of performances conceived by dancer/choreographer Kathleen Delaney and classical accordion player/composer Claudio Jacomucci. The concert is inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s eponymous film, known to the international audience under the title of Arabian Nights as one of the masterpieces of world cinema. The movie proceeds along a dual structure: short stories or more fully structured fables are interwoven in a thin plot, with dreams and stories of love either happy or tragic, to create a unique tapestry of light, in which individual stories of innocent encounters come together in a harmonious song to life and love. The movie perfectly blends collective scenes and individual affairs depicting a feeling of humanity in its broadest sense.
On a very different scale, the concert also puts together different stories, 3 music pieces connected by nuances of eastern music. Performed by 30 people that include musicians, dancers and choir from very different backgrounds and experience, the concert is a unique experiment in its genre.
Suite Venetienne / Follow me is a new creation by dancer Kathleen Delaney, accordionist Claudio Jacomucci and double bass player Daniele Roccato, inspired both by the architecture of Venice, with its labyrinth of enchantments and the splendour of the Renaissance mingled with the magnificence of the Byzantine. Within this framework, the choreography recalls the work of Sophie Calle, French visual artist who used to obsessively follow strangers in the streets of Venice, taking pictures of them.
Arcana is a piece for choir, solo vocalist and six classical accordions by Claudio Jacomucci, inspired by ethnic traditions and techniques (Inuit, Kecac, Carnatic, Shakuhachi).
Olson III, interpreted by choir, classical accordion ensemble and dancers may be considered one of the most powerful compositions from minimalist composer Terry Riley.
Based on the same phasing principles as In C, Olson III is filled with short motifs that each ensemble member must play and repeat before moving onto the next one. Inspired by Zen philosophy, Indian ragas, and Balinese gamelan, Riley’s music is generally built on regular rhythms to which overlapping improvised melodic lines and harmonic turns are added.
