Opening season

Ikarai – Muhammad

The stage will be transformed into a boxing ring for ensemble Ikarai in a thrilling performance about boxing legend Muhammad Ali, with classical instruments, audio samples and energetic improvisations.

The story of Muhammad Ali and his boxing match against George Foreman, the ‘rumble in the jungle’ that shook the world, is set to music by Ikarai, in a true blend of classical music, jazz and improvisation. The ensemble comes together on a stage that’s turned into a boxing ring, in a night full of recollections, speeches and poems by the boxer who’s still known as ‘The Greatest’.

The young ensemble Ikarai consists of violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano and drums: a string ensemble that includes a jazz trio. Founding members Julian Schneemann and Camiel Jansen both write music for the ensemble, bridging the gap that has developed between classical music and improvisation, between composer and performer.

Tessel Hersbach violin, Yanna Pelser viola, Bence Huszar cello, Julian Schneemann piano, Camiel Jansen bass/compositions, Jeroen Batterink drums
