Singer Anna Serierse and guitarist Gijs Idema currently take inspiration from visual elements when they are composing together for their quartet. For example, their new music is informed by the cloud studies of painters William Turner and John Constable. On the album Cloud Studies, the characteristic styles of these English painters were translated to a musical canvas by the Idema/Serierse Quartet.
Anna Serierse and Gijs Idema find new ways to fuse vocals and guitar, supported by the solid rhythm section of Tijs Klaassen on double bass and Tim Hennekes on drums. Their quartet is a unity, with a strong feel for freedom, melody, rhythm and form. Their debut album Motus (2020) was nominated for an Edison Award. For this album, Anna and Gijs were influenced by the cities where they were studying at the time, Trondheim and New York.
“There are at least two persistent prejudices toward young jazz musicians. One: they are intimidated by tradition. Two: they do not dare to color outside the lines. None of that applies to the quartet of singer Anna Serierse and guitarist Gijs Idema. Their purity and curiosity are more than infectious as they write whimsical and unpredictable songs, seasoned with a touch of humor and poetry.” (Trouw)
