Lively variations on the poetic music of saxophonist Steve Lacy, by his former student Josh Sinton and his fantastic band from New York.

Ideal Bread from Brooklyn, New York plays Steve Lacy’s music with the energy of the youngest jazz generation, like Lacy once brought Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols to the attention of his contemporaries. Steve Lacy (1934-2004) is known as one of the best, most innovative soprano sax players of all time, as well as a ground breaking composer who linked bebop to modern classical music. He regularly performed at the Bimhuis and found kindred spirits here in Misha Mengelberg and the musicians of ICP.

Ideal Bread is fully dedicated to the music of Steve Lacy, which distinguishes itself by its clarity and poetic vision. The band was founded by baritone saxophonist Josh Sinton, who studied with Lacy from 2002 to 2004 at New England Conservatory. Appearing on trumpet is Kirk Knuffke, who recently was nominated by Jazz Journalists Association as one of the four best trumpet players of the year. Beating the Teens, the title of the new Ideal Bread album, refers to the legendary Lacy album Scratching the Seventies.

‘They embrace the fierce originality and rigor of Lacy’s original music and remake it in an utterly distinctive way’ (Downbeat, in a **** 1/2 –review of the Ideal Bread-album Transmit).

‘I’m still mystified by Lacy’s approach. Some of his writing has the repetitive quality of a nursery rhyme, some of it is more akin to Webern and other atonal composers… Steve Lacy said that when it comes down to it, music is either alive or dead. This was my effort to keep the music alive… while making this record I brought together every musical influence I’ve been absorbing over the years: Iggy Pop, Mos Def, Tim Berne, Abbey Lincoln, AMM, Fugazi, Henry Threadgill… the list is long, but the results have been worth it’ (Josh Sinton).

‘Like a baker makes his bread, I make music… If I make the same bread tomorrow, that bores me…I have to remake it, I have to do better… I’m always looking for… the ideal bread’ (Steve Lacy, 1976).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
