No spirituality without ritual, no ritual without music. With the constant advance of secularization, quite a few Dutch citizens are seeking spiritual satisfaction in music and influences from faraway and old cultures are easily finding large audiences. Ritual music in contemporary Holland is the starting premise for an extensive multi-disciplinary total programme in the Bimhuis and Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ. In 1995 Sinta Wullur had a twelve tone chromatic gamelan especially made. For the first time this enabled gamelan to play with western instruments, without the limitation of the traditional five tones and problems of tuning. In this concert Sinta Wullur and Ensemble Multifoon once again push boundaries by adding Indian instruments. Hollandse Rituelen (Dutch Rituals) ends round about midnight with an explosive blend of gospel from the United States and the Amsterdam Bijlmer. American soul and gospel vocalist Wendell Morrison sought out his Amsterdam soul mates and put together a resounding finale concert of well-known and new gospel songs. Passe-partouts (go-as-you-please tickets) for the Bimhuis and Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ are available at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ ticket office: euro 35,00 (MIJ-kaart euro 32,50, Stadspas, 65+, CJP euro 28,00) Information: www.radio4.nl/hollandserituelen
