It all started with a turtle who moved in with Meredith Monk in the late 1970s. In her New York apartment, Meredith dreamed about the turtle. And she wondered: what does a turtle actually dream about? Meredith Monk, an icon of contemporary music, is a spirited all-rounder who composes, dances, plays and, above all, sings. The 80-year-old American has never lost the child in herself. In Hey Meredith!, the makers of Zonzo Company travel through Monk’s magnificent oeuvre, which spans more than half a century, following her voice.
Monk’s turtle dreams led to the album Turtle Dreams (1983), which is, as usual, an exploration of the endless possibilities of her voice. Meredith Monk’s spirit of exploration inspired Zonzo Compagnie to create this performance. Zonzo Compagnie is a Belgian music theatre company for a young audience. It has previously produced portrait performances about J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell, John Cage and Miles Davis. Interesting fact: Meredith Monk herself once created a performance for Zonzo Compagnie.
