HENRY THREADGILL & ZOOID

Henry Threadgill-alto sax, flute, Liberty Ellman-guitar, Stomu Takeishi-bass, Jose Davila-tuba, trombone, Elliot Kavee-drums

The saxophonist/flutist/composer from Chicago, Henry Threadgill is one of the grand masters and innovators of contemporary jazz, even though he does not want to be put into categories: ‘I do music, period. Jazz, European orchestral music. American religious music, white and black. Parades. All types of functional music, period.’ After a thirteen year absence, Threadgill is finally back in the Bimhuis. Previous gigs here were with his legendary formations Air, Sextett and Very Very Circus. Zooid is the name of his present-day group, that includes the enormously talented guitarist Liberty Ellmann. ‘Threadgill’s is music with drama, humor and a sinister side, and he’s one of the most important composers working today in jazz.’ (Downbeat). ‘It would be difficult to overestimate Treadgill’s role in perpetually altering the meaning of jazz. He has changed our underlying assumptions of what jazz can and should be.’ (Chicago Tribune). BIMHUIS card holders are required to pay an € 2 surcharge.
