HAN BENNINK & CATS ON KEYS

BENNINK IN DUO WITH BOBBY FEW, GERARD BOUWHUIS, OSCAR JAN HOOGLAND
Afterwards: DJ Torpedo

New Year’s Concert featuring Han Bennink in duo with pianists representing different phases of his career. The drummer turns 75 this year and celebrates 50 years of Instant Composers Pool.

Holland’s most adventurous drummer, Han Bennink, turns 75 this year. Half a century ago he stood at the foundation of the influential Instant Composers Pool, the collective in which he and pianist Misha Mengelberg influenced generations of improvising musicians from all over the world.

Throughout his career, Han Bennink has regularly performed duos with pianists. For the New Year’s Concert at the Bimhuis he has invited a number of them: Bobby Few, Gerard Bouwhuis and Oscar Jan Hoogland. They represent various directions of improvised music.

American pianist Bobby Few accompanied Albert Ayler on the album Music is the Healing Force of the Universe, and he was a member of the legendary Frank Wright Quartet, which stirred up the Paradiso venue in its early years. Since the 1970s he has been living in Paris, where he collaborated with Steve Lacy. Gerard Bouwhuis is specialized in contemporary music, as a pianist with among others Asko|Schönberg and LOOS. Oscar Jan Hoogland is a key figure in the Amsterdam underground, where noise-, rock- and punk-improv stand equally alongside jazz and ‘instant composing’.

‘Few drummers can swing as hard as Bennink (Parool).
