HÅKON KORNSTAD TENOR BATTLE
ONE SET – NO INTERMISSION
Håkon Kornstad tenor/tenorsax/fluit, Sigbjørn Apeland harmonium, Lars Henrik Johansen harpsichord, cimbalom, Per Zanussi bas/zaag, Øyvind Skarbø drums
Håkon Kornstad is both jazz saxophonist and opera singer, a rare double talent. This Norwegian one man tenor battle and his ensemble combine the best of two worlds.
Just after his international breakthrough as a jazz saxophonist he decided to try opera singing, and it worked: Håkon Kornstad surprises everyone, including himself, with his double talent as an opera tenor and a tenor sax player. This one man tenor battle has already performed at the Bimhuis as a solo artist. Now he presents his five-piece ensemble with marvelous Norwegian musicians. Arias by Massenet, Gluck and Bizet segue into glowing jazz improvisations, colored with unusual instruments such as harmonium and singing saw.
‘Opera meets Scandinavian jazz seamlessly. An eloquent tenor sax and a fine operatic tenor voice segue into a single stream for a graceful sympathetic partnership’ (The Guardian).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
