GUNTER HAMPEL EUROPEAN QUARTET

Since the 1960s, multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel has been at t the cutting edge of European improvisational music.. He played jazz without hiding his classical background and he developed into one of the world’s best vibraphone players. He has mastered the flute and the bass clarinet as well; even Eric Dolphy was impressed by his skills on these instruments. He has collaborated with Jeanne Lee, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Willem Breuker, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton and many others. The German avant-gardist and composer makes room for young European musicians in his new quartet. ‘His adaptability and ability to shift between idioms is consistently impressive’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz).
