DJ mps PILOT GLOBAL GROOVES
With Omnibus, Ernst Glerum shows that, besides being a great double bass player, he is also a marvelous pianist. ‘Glerum loves songs, can write them and always plays with a lyrical intonation and love for melody. Behind the grand piano a Monk like intonation and playful logic emerges, carried by dry funk or juicy blues and improvisations in which form and contents melt together perfectly’. (de Volkskrant). The Robin Nolan Trio, one of the groups from the vanguard of Django style gipsy jazz, performed in a legendary double Bimhuis bill with Jimmy Rosenberg last summer. Saxophonist/composer Sean Bergin (Durban, 1948) played an important role in the introduction of vital kwela melodies in the Netherlands. With his band Nansika he concentrates on the work of South African composers like Mackay Davashe, Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Abdullah Ibrahim, Johnny Dyani. With trumpet player Claude Deppa Bergin did South African tours with Louis Moholo’s Viva La Black. Deppa also played in the illustrious Brotherhood of Breath, one of the most important sources of inspiration of Nansika. After midnight the first performance of 2008: DJ mps PILOT does a four hour set of eclectic global grooves, from Nigerian Afro beat to driving brass music from the Balkans. Pinchos, tapas and ‘oliebollen’ included. Box office and cafe open at 20.00u – restaurant closed
