GINGER BAKER JAZZ CONFUSION
Friday29 May 2015

Ginger Baker is legendary as the drummer from Cream, but he has much more to offer. Jazz, latin and afro beat: it all comes together in Jazz Confusion, ‘virtuosic small-combo jazz abounding with spirit, excitement and smarts’ (Relix).

British drummer Ginger Baker became world famous in the late 1960s with Cream, his power trio with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. Before that he made name as a jazz drummer in the London jazz clubs, learning the tricks of the trade from his great example Phil Seamen. He celebrated success with Graham Bond Organization and Blind Faith before he took off to Africa. In Lagos he founded a studio and played a vital role in the development of afro beat, the movement associated with band leader Fela Kuti.

Ginger Baker traveled the world and currently lives in South Africa. From jazz, rock and latin to African percussion: all the influences of his career come together in his current quartet Jazz Confusion. The band can be heard on Why? (2014), Baker’s first studio album in 16 years. Soxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, who played with James Brown and Van Morrison, wrote some of the tunes alongside Baker himself. The repertory also contains pieces by, among others, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins.

‘A legendary name with a superb jazz quartet’ (Relix).

‘Baker’s sound is so imposing and broad, slow and confident. It’s not loud with ambition, but with spirit and intent’ (New York Times).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
