The Utrecht saxophonist/composer Gijs Hendriks made his debut in the mid 50’s as a jazz musician in a club for American militaries in Frankfurt. He played in Boy’s big Band, for years he was the corner stone of the Vara Dansorkest as a baritone player and in various situations he shared the stage with colleagues like Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Johnny Griffin. His playing roots in bop but his frame of reference is much broader. Hendriks is an outstanding character. To quote Han Bennink: ‘Since years he is unshakable and he is true to his own music. He is also a real part of Utrecht, a local cat like you only find in the States’.
