GERI ALLEN’S GRAND RIVER CROSSINGS
AFTERWARDS DJ WELMOED AT THE CAFÉ
Geri Allen piano
Jazz pianist Geri Allen plays personal solo piano interpretations of the Motown soul hits of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, alongside other influential music from her youth in Detroit.
In her solo program Grand River Crossings renowned pianist Geri Allen goes back to the music of her youth in Detroit, in particular the soul and R&B from the world famous record label Motown. Alongside the Motown hits of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, she improvises on music by The Beatles and her former tutor Marcus Belgrave, with whom she performed at the Bimhuis for the very first time in 1982.
Pianist /composer Geri Allen has mastered all aspects of jazz and has performed with major artists from the mainstream as well as the avant-garde, from Dianne Reeves to Ornette Coleman. She already performed at the Bimhuis in 1982 as an unknown pianist in the band of Marcus Belgrave. In the same year she moved from Detroit to New York where she made a name in the blossoming M-Base scene, which brought forth Steve Coleman and Cassandra Wilson, among others. Her appreciation as a jazz performer and composer reached a high point in 2008 when she received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.
‘There is no doubt that Geri Allen is one of our finer pianists and jazz conceptualists’ (Downbeat).
