GARY SMULYAN & REIN DE GRAAFF TRIO

Gary Smulyan baritonsax, Rein de Graaff piano, Marius Beets bas, Eric Ineke drums

The best baritone sax player in the Downbeat Critics Poll 2014 performs with ‘Professor Bop’ Rein de Graaff. ‘Non-stop, on the edge saxophone enthusiasm’ (Jazz Times).

‘Smulyan puts the “tone” back in baritone’, is what Downbeat wrote and indeed, that powerful, expressive sound will not be lightly forgotten. This year Gary Smulyan has again been voted best baritone saxophonist in the Downbeat Critics Poll, so this is a great occasion to see him on stage. He will perform at the Bimhuis with the trio of ‘Professor Bop’ Rein de Graaff, who has brought over jazz heroes from the States to the Netherlands for decades now.

Gary Smulyan anchored many saxophone sections in big bands like Woody Herman’s The Young Thundering Herd and the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and he collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Ray Charles and many, many others. According to Jazz Times Magazine this is what we can expect from him as a soloist: ‘Non-stop, on the edge saxophone enthusiasm.’

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
