FUGARA: STOCKHAUSEN/VAN KEMENADE/BUSCH/OUNASKARI
Paul van Kemenade altsax, Markus Stockhausen trompet/flugelhorn, Stevko Busch piano, Markku Ounaskari drums/percussie
Evocative folk melodies from the likes of Russia, Eastern Europe and South Africa are points of departure for the improvisations of Fugara, the jazz quartet led by pianist/composer Stevko Busch. Paul van Kemenade’s expressive alto saxophone playing is a perfect foil to the versatile sound of trumpet player Markus Stockhausen, son of the famous composer. Finnish master drummer Markku Ounaskari completes the music with his simultaneously rhythmical and melodic approach to percussion. ‘The primary strength of this quartet is its wide emotional range’ (Trouw).
