The laughing ousider’, is what he is called. Fred Frith started out as a guitarist in the legendary progressive rock group of Henry Cow and then threw himself into the New York downtown scene, as the bas player of Naked City to name one job. For several years he devoted himself to composed atmospheric soundscapes for orchestras like the Ensemble Modern. His new work, Urban Still, is a composition for electric guitar and saxophone quartet, one big lento full of microtonal moves, with Frith’s unorthodox blend of melody and abstract sound as the main solo voice.
