FLY: MARK TURNER, JEFF BALLARD, LARRY GRENADIER

The name Fly was taken from the trio’s collective composition, ‘Fly Mr. Freakjar,’ which is in turn an anagram of the members’ first names. Drummer Jeff Ballard, bass player Larry Grenadier and saxophone player Mark Turner have all made their names in the bands of Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny and others. This young trio is not so much about excelling in solos, but more about coherence. ‘Fly takes it a notch higher by reaching beyond the obvious.’ (Downbeat)
